Our kitchen island tops are made by hand from start to finish by us, right here in Northeast Ohio. We have our own carpenter (also named Tom) who, once you place your order, gets to work building the substrate for your top. Unlike some other companies, we use only cabinet grade plywood for your project. Square edges or bull-nose, like the top in this listing are the same price. Meanwhile Gwen cuts the copper to size & spirits it away to perform her magic :) Because this finish is created organically, your island top will truly be one of a kind. Her work involves skill but also patience & a true love of copper, all of which she has in spades. Once Gwen's done she hands the copper off to one of our hammerers. Skye is our expert with the tinner's hammer, it's a skill-set that not all can master. The hammer creates between a dime & a nickel sized indent on the surface to increase the durability of the copper against damage from dropped pots & such while ensuring the surface remains flat enough to use effectively. Scott is the master with Spanish hammering & both of them spend 5 days a week hand hammering each sheet of copper perfectly so that you end up with a piece you will love for many many years! After the copper is adhered to the substrate, all of the corners are soldered & finished out before we apply 3 coats of food safe sealer. While the sealer is curing, Tom is back in his wood-shop building the wood crate we use to transport all of our tops. Our tops ship either FedEx, UPS or by a freight hauler depending upon the size & weight of the piece.
