Front cover of Good Housekeeping magazine for 1932 with a little boy swept along by the craze for aviation. With toy aeroplane in hand, and his Biggles style flying helmet on his head, he gazes up into the sky at a plane as it casts a shadow on the ground The compassion and affection for children that Jessie Wilcox-Smith expressed in her art emerged when she was a kindergarten teacher. Coerced into taking an art class that a relative was teaching, Wilcox-Smith was 20 when she accidentally discovered her artistic talent. Pursuing a formal art education, she went on to illustrate ads for "Ladies Home Journal." Wholesome and sensitive, her images graced children's books, magazine covers and ads for Cream of Wheat, Campbell's Soup, the Red Cross and Ivory Soap.
