This Gram-negative bacterium occurs in the intestines of humans and animals. Several Salmonella species cause human food poisoning (salmonellosis) when contaminated food such as meat, milk and eggs, is eaten. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. The infection is treated by rehydration therapy, although antibiotics must be taken if the bacteria have spread into the bloodstream. Magnification unknown.
