The exquisite American table, circa 1930, featuring a rare & magnificent, rich, highly figured, radiating, matched feathered flame mahogany inlaid circular top, so highly stylized it appears mildly textured, framed by stepped molded edge, over beautifully inlaid wide rim apron with luxurious, warm, rich mahogany inlaid in superb vertical grain pattern, elegantly rising on baluster-form tapered pedestal atop a shaped plinth base, resting on four bun feet. Signed verso, stamped "SK" in a circle, numbered "6086" "x7574" & retaining the original "Schmieg & Kotzian" NY "Designers & Cabinet Makers" metal plaque. As warm & attractive as it is useful, this table can be used a variety of ways including as a center table (centre), side or accent table, or placed in the entry as a stunning statement piece! They established a furniture firm in business in London, England from 1899 to 1907, when they moved to New York. After Karl Schmieg died in 1949, the company continued on for a few more years, but was then sold. Both Karl Schmieg & Heinrich Kotzian were German cabinet makers, who were trained in the traditional European apprentice system. They were renouned for their exquisite design & superior quality traditional hand-craftmanship. Among pieces of traditional furniture, they also made cabinets for Steinway pianos.
