DESCRIPTION: An unframed art print of a hand-drawn urban sketch of the historic Cecil Hotel in Alexandria, Egypt. Also available as a bookmark at https://www.etsy.com/listing/915995439/alexandria-bookmark-of-cecil-hotel BUILDING BACKGROUND: Cecil used to be one of the seen-and-be-seen spots in Alexandria, attracting the rich cosmopolitan elite. It has been visited by high profile guests including Sir Winston Churchill & Umm Kulthum. It was built in 1929 by the French-Egyptian Metzger family as a romantic getaway. The hotel is located at Saad Zaghloul Square & right on the harbor. During World War II, the hotel functioned as a headquarters for the British Intelligence. Shortly after the Egyptian revolution in 1952, the hotel was seized by the Egyptian government & nationalized by the late president Gamal Abdel Nasser. It took the Metzger family half a century in court to reclaim ownership of the Cecil hotel. At the end, they sold it to the Egyptian government, who is currently renting it to the Steigenberger hotel chain.
