That Idaho Morning I'll Always Remember ~ original, contemporary abstract landscape painting by New Mexico artist Dawn Chandler It was the morning after my first night ever camping alone. A couple weeks earlier My Good Man & I had embarked on an epic roadtrip from New Mexico. After camping together on the Oregon coast for several nights, we parted was at the Portland airport so that he could travel to a family wedding. It was up to me to make my way back to New Mexico on what was now to be a solo roadtrip. My first night alone was in Idaho, at a park I'd picked randomly off the map. Little did I know then what a fabulous choice I'd made in Heyburn State Park. Tucked in an evergreen forest, high above a beautiful Chatcolet Lake, I couldn't have asked for a more serene spot. I remember the smell of the pine forest, the lapping of lake water along the shore.... the long gauzy arm of midsummer dusk. Come morning I broke camp early as sunlight began to shimmer on the lake. As I slowly drove away from my campsite, the road descended through tall pines along the water & there, gliding parallel along with me through the trees & above the lake was a bald eagle. A BALD EAGLE! I lowered my window & listened to her high call. She glided there with me for several long magical moments. & I knew I would be safe on my journey. It's interesting to note that this painting started out as a very traditional representational rendering of Chatcolet Lake. But the painting was boring & didn't come close to capturing the magic of my memories of that beautiful Idaho landscape. This abstraction captures so much more personally & vividly the essence of my Idaho sojourn. This is an original, one-of-a-kind painting by Dawn Chandler.
