Welcome to The Textile Trunk ~ please follow us on Instagram! We are @textiletrunk An extraordinary find! This textile has been in my private collection for many many years! You can see the fabulous & rare " chef de piece" or makers mark on the fabric ~ This amazing bed valance was printed in Angers , a city in Western France, in 1785. This area of France was a very important center for printed textiles at the end of the 18th century ~ You can see the Chef de piece~ a rare & wonderful discovery. Playful, romantic scenes, a man playing a bagpipe for a young shepherdess as she sits under the beautifully drawn trees. This fabric was woodblock printed. ~ This textile was printed using hand carved wooden blocks ~ the tones are simply gorgeous ! A wonderfully early printed fabric ~ the outlines of the designs are a wonderful deep raspberry pink & there are wonderful shades of antique pink in the printing. The fabric is a siamoise , ( linen & cotton blend , hand woven with wonderful threads of uneven diameter ) The tone of the ground siamoise is the most beautiful grayed off-white, wonderfully aged. The weight & weave of the fabric is stunning, & this textile is backed in plain linen ~ A RARE & fabulous find Ideal for use or wonderful for any textile collection ~ ( Toile 247 ) MEASUREMENTS : This piece measures approximately : 171 inches wide at the top, 47 inches long on the right side, & the center is approx. 23 inches deep ~ CONDITION : This stunning textile is in as found, not freshly laundered condition. There are some sighs of time & use, but generally it's spectacular for it's age! The backing is pieced & the front too~ the backing has patches, mends etc ~ The valance has some tiny age marks, a tear at the top etc , minor ~ Generally gorgeous for it's age however not without the signs of time & use often inherent in these wonderful fabrics French Toile De Angers Chef Piece Makers Mark 18Th Century Textile 1785
