Description

Stunning late 1920s to mid 1930s RARE DECO RED WING LAMP of a jardiniere urn shape, two handled vintage POTTERY LAMP. Difficult to find ~ this one with lion heads below the deco handles...they look more like dog heads. Pictured in the Reiss Red Wing book (pp 87-93). The depth of color in the glaze is gorgeous ~ it changes in the light. It is in very good to excellent vintage shape: Only one noteworthy blemish is a bottom flake that has been darkened years ago with some sort of dark clay on the bottom...it is only about 1/16 inch, very unnoticeable, barely touches the color portion. & a shallow glaze scratch about 2.5" just under the neck - it is not noticeable unless pointed out. Examination on the interior shows it does not go through the clay. There are a couple typical factory glaze flea bites here & there. Under base, a couple factory manufacture clay splits in the pots inner base edge, see photo. Nothing beyond that, the glaze is beautiful, the lamp without any nicks, everything about it just beautiful. A fairly large lamp, 19.5 " tall to the top of the finial, & 9.5 " tall to the top of the pottery, x 9 " across from lion nose to nose. There is good detail & a very heavy pottery weight, good balance, with a nice semi matt glaze finish. Color is burgundy wine, almost a deep dusty rose color depending on the light. Very unusual color & versatile. At some point, it looks to have been rewired because the metal on the switch cover looks newer brass... the switch is a turn switch that works perfectly. The harp is old original. It has a round early brass finial at the top with a touch of verdigris. This has an early Red Wing ink stamp. Red Wing made lamps during the late 1920s into the 1930s, & just as they had answered to rural America with their pottery crocks & jugs, they increased their pottery production with a line of pottery glazed lamps to answer as well to rural America for the need of lighting, as electricity was subsidized through the ERA. Red Wing Lamp production ended in 1947 about the same time stoneware was phased out. This pottery base is heavy enough to feel like stoneware. Excellent for lamp balance, & has good mid century modern deco lines to it in an unusual & decorative color for a lamp! Red Wing lamps have become quite collectible now with prices increasing. You will love adding this to your home ~ it is a very unique lamp in both shape & color~! It does not look like anything in the market today, so definitely has that unique vintage quality to it~!
