The Big Dipper, the bright asterism of the constellation URSA Major or also known as The Great Bear, consisting of seven bright stars. I have always loved these stars as a child. I was taught that if you make an imaginary line through the two stars, Merak & Dubhe, that make up the edge of the cup that you could draw that line up to Polaris, the North Star. A beautiful piece for any stargazer or explorer on land or sea. Large Disk: .75" (19.1mm) Medium Disk : .625" (15.9mm) in Greek mythology, the Great Bear was once a nymph named Callisto whom Zeus had fallen for & had a son with. Queen Hara, his wife, became jealous & turned Callisto into a bear. Callisto, Zeus' son, Arcas encountered the she-bear in the forest & not knowing who she was, raised his spear in fear. Zeus intervened & threw them into the heavens. There Callisto remains in the night sky. Hara's final command in her bitterness was that the bear may not touch her paws in the northern waters, therefore the Great Bear never sets below the horizon in the northern hemisphere.
