There is a lovely stretch of road between Paso Robles & Cambria approaching the wonderfully scenic Central California coastline. I never fail to stop & admire the view of the iconic Morro Rock in the distance in this first glimpse of the Pacific as I make my way from my Sierra home. Morro Rock is not necessarily always the most fantastic of formations up close, but in this view, it's importance as a navigational marker & as a beloved point of reference for this area is completely realized. Called El Morro by the first Western explorers, it can be translated as 'the nose' or 'the hill' & either works. This view also highlights the beauty of our imperiled coastal oak woodlands. Over 300 native terrestrial vertebrate species use oak woodlands for food, cover or reproduction. The importance of this unique habitat, beyond its beauty, is undervalued by humankind, as yet.
