ABOUT THIS PRINT: Milk bars, as they were known in Melbourne, were small local shops that sold milk, newspaper, mixed lollies, icypoles & maybe even milkshakes & pies if you were lucky. They were all over the suburbs when I was growing up in the 1980s & there always seemed to be one in walking or close riding distance, wherever you were. Sadly, very few still exist, due to changes in shopping habits & the rise in popularity of large supermarkets chains & shopping centres. This illustration features a milk bar that existed near where I now live, but as it was 12 years ago, in 2006. I was in the area visiting a friend & as I would often do then (and still do now), I decided to stop & take photo of this milk bar in its fading glory, even though it was raining. The building's now painted over all in white (including the glass) & is currently used to store traffic signs, but will hopefully come back to life in a new form some day.
