Description

This desk is inspired by the railroad bridges & other late 19th & early 20th century industrial construction found throughout the Pittsburgh area. Every piece in this store is made entirely by hand in my own shop as a tribute to the craftsmen who came before us. Construction begins with locally sourced hot rolled steel strip & angle. The metal pieces are sawed to length using an antique industrial power hacksaw. Holes for the rivets are punched by hand with a compound leverage punching tool. Each of the several hundred rivets are heated individually with a torch & set with either a vintage pneumatic mechanical press or a pneumatic rivet hammer; just like over a hundred years ago. I don't know exactly what it weighs but it comes in somewhere between 350 & 400 pounds. So, when you move it into your office eat your Wheaties & recruit the assistance of several strong friends. The finish is a satin black powdercoat for durability. Each leg has an adjustable leveling foot underneath to compensate for irregular floors. The tops are made from reclaimed lumber. By its nature, reclaimed lumber is inconsistent with respect to its species, availability, dimensions & so forth. Consequently, it will vary in thickness & appearance from what you see in the picture. However, every piece I build is made to order & as a result I am able to accommodate just about any request. So if you want a specific kind of wood, different color, a special size, a different height or anything else, please let me know. Hot Riveted Railroad Bridge Desk
