Morning Dawning in the Enchanted Forest - Santa Fe - New Mexico - original plein air landscape painting in oil by Dawn Chandler I love to rise extra early & find solitude in the forest. My goal is always to be "first car" at the trail head. Usually I am, & when I return to my car a few hours later, the parking lot is always packed. On this morning my pup & I got off the main path & entered the "fairy tale forest" (as I like to call it). We found a spot with a good downed tree for me to sit on, & space for her to lie down on her blanket. While I studied the forest for color, she studied it for deer. We were so early that when I began the painting the light in the forest was a soft grey. Only after I finished my painting did sunlight begin to shine through the aspens. I've kept this painting in my personal collection for several years because I so love the memory of it. Finally I'm ready to release it & share it. :-) I was so pleased to discover that I still had photos from that morning. Note the photo of my palette is just before I began painting. I'd loaded it with fresh paint the night before, & apparently the cadmium red was pretty wet & oily, for it slipped around on the palette while we hiked hence that red smudge of paint across the palette.
