Description

A brass rubbing of a Victorian Coal Plate found Knightsbridge. Farmer Bros., established in 1842, were ironmongers with a shop in Fulham Road, London. Coal plates are still to be found in many pavements across London. Made from cast iron, the majority are 12 inches in diameter (30.5 cms), & display a wide variety of designs & styles. Some advertise the maker, or a particular business, whilst others are merely geometric or floral designs without any lettering. The detail in this particular plate is still very sharp & crisp, which lends itself to a fine rubbing. It seems appropriate to use a traditional technique to record a historic item. The rubbing is made on architect's detail paper, with a wax crayon. 60 x 84.1 cms. 53 gsm. The plate + surround measures 14 inches / 35 cms diameter. Coal Plate Rubbing Farmer Bros. & Co.
