Mid-century large french painting of a tiny beautiful village square in the south of France. It is oil on hard carton / cardboard & is signed by the artist : P. Commarmond. A woman sits under a Wisteria vine next to her front door knitting or doing needlework as the village fountain splashes in the background. Pierre Commarmond born in Lyon, France in 1897 & died at the age of 86 in 1983. He was a painter & a graphic artist creating some of the most beautiful & well know travel posters after WWII. He began his art studies as a student of Karl Cartier followed by courses at the Galland workshop. Later, he worked at & organized poster exhibitions for tourism & the Chemins de Fer (railroad). He was a member of the Society of French artists associating him with many circles of artists from various schools throughout France including l'Ecole Francais & l'Ecole de la Marine. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1931 & 1932, & regularly sent his works to the Salon of the Society of Mountain Painters. After his mobilization during the First World War, Commarmond was mobilized again during the Second World War, during which he was taken prisoner at Oflag XIII A. He also staged several plays, for which he designed costumes & sets. Upon his return to France, he became artistic director of Éditions Chaix creating his famous posters promoting tourism in France & throughout Europe. From his many travels through France & Europe, he brought back many landscapes which served as the material for his work on these posters CONDITION : Good some light signs of time. There are a few scuffs here & there around the edges from its original frame. May need a bit of cleaning if desired. Comes without a frame.
