Stacked Landscape Original Oil Painting on canvas 28 x 28 inches This thickly textured rich impasto oil painting is on stretched, primed & gessoed cotton duck canvas. After a long period of curing, the painting is then treated with layers of varnish to protect & enhance the colours & surface. The canvas will be rolled for shipping, ready for framing to your preferences. About this work This series of work is based on the terrain & water behaviour of the area of moorland in the upper catchment area of the river Calder above Todmorden. The focus of this body of work is a small area of the upper catchment of the River Calder above Todmorden & Hebden Bridge. The sources of some tributaries to the main river have been visited & studied, as well as the main river itself as it flows though the towns. The influence of what happens to the land & the water in the uplands is one of the main areas of interest for the production of the artwork. Visits in every season were made to study a small tributary of the river Calder arising on Langfield Common to the South East of Todmorden in summer the source was barely discernible, hidden amongst couch grasses & sphagnum mosses. in winter the snow revealed the course of the river at its start as it gathered pace through the wet land now solid & set, a river waiting to happen again. I was looking at the shapes of the flow, & the boulders & plants that intercept it. The idea that there exist multiple planes within this landscape both above & below the water is important to the way the painting was made. The painting is many layered, to express the layers of water, & the land, & time passing as the rivers flow.
