ABOUT THE ARTWORK This original handmade 9"x12" linocut print of a black & white floral still life was inspired by the flowers in its composition (dramatic snapdragons, assertive carnations, & showy zinnias) as well as vase, which is one of my favorites. I love the thick black brush stroke of glaze in which delicate origami cranes are carved in relief. It felt like an appropriate muse for my own relief printmaking using a linoleum block matrix. To finish my composition, I added a bold black geometric shape in the background to anchor the image & add dynamism. This design is #2 in a series of Crane Vase Still Life studies. It is an Open Edition monoblock print, all hand drawn/carved/pressed & printed. Each print is signed & dated by the artist (me!). HOW IT'S MADE: This image began with a line drawing in pen of this bouquet of flowers harvested from my back garden. I then reversed the image, & transferred it using carbon paper onto a blank linoleum printmaking block. Then comes the fun part of carving away every part of the linoleum I don't want to see in the finished image. Once carving is complete, I use a brayer to roll on thin layers of relief printing ink, then place my fine art paper on top & transfer the ink by hand using a baren, a hand-pulled small press, or my trusty wooden spoon! NOTE: Original print from a hand-carved linoleum block. Each pulled print is ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE & will show subtle variations in ink transfer.
