An original 1901 watercolour painting, Frederick P. Shuckard, Figure in Moorland Landscape. A charming vignette watercolour by Frederick Parsons Shuckard (1844-1926), painted in crisp, vibrant tones. On watermarked Polton Air Dried Vellum wove paper. This painting is one of a vibrant series of watercolours that we have for sale by Frederick Parsons Shuckard (1844-1926). Shuckard's best-known work is his 1909 oil painting, 'Queen Victoria Receiving the News of Her Accession at Kensington Palace, 20 June 1837', in the collection of the Museum of London. He was influenced by the academic style of Pre-Raphaelite artist Henry Tanworth Wells RA, & he excelled at painting in a highly detailed realistic manner. Little is recorded about the life of Stuckard. He studied at the School of Art at South Kensington in 1867, where he received a prize for 'Drawing from life'. He is listed as having worked in Peckham & in Lewisham, London from 1868 to 1901. These landscape watercolours show Shuckard's exacting skill, being essays in colour, composition & watercolour technique; they employ a variety of effects such as sponging, masking & stippling. The paintings also reveal a Romantic sensibility: a Wordsworthian fusion of nature & the divine & preoccupation with memories of childhood. Shuckard paintings focus on specific features in the landscapethe waterwheel, beech tree, robin or pheasantwhich function as motifs that trigger happy memories of youth. Some minor age toning as shown, mainly to the periphery of the sheet. Some very slight buckling to the paper. The picture may have other minor imperfections such as slight marks, foxing, creasing or pinholes, commensurate with age. Please see photos for detail. Frederick P.
