They were formed as a result of the rapid cooling of lava on the earth's surface & subsequent natural splitting. in the section, such columns are of various shapes - from rectangular tetrahedral to six- & eight-sided. That is, millions of years ago there were volcanoes in this place. Now basalt is mined here for various needs. For example, for the road surface, a large part of the city of Lviv is covered with paving stones from this place.
