A set of four very nice vintage mocca or coffee mugs in stoneware, from Arabia, Finland. The pattern is very bold & modernistic with a warm mustard color, with earth tones as well as black & brown striped details, all hand painted. They are 7.5cm (2.95") high & 7cm (2.75") in diameter, the saucers are 12.5cm (4.92") in diameter. One mug has an unevenness in the glazing, yet overall ar they in a very good condition. Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist (1928-2005), Born in Esbo, Finland, was a Finnish ceramicist. Olin studied porcelain painting at the Swedish School of Art & Design from 1948-1951 & worked at the Arabia Keramik Art Industry Department in 1951-1975, the 1968-1975 Product Planning Department & the 1976-1990 Art Department. She designed models & decors for mass-produced porcelain, pottery & later for works of ceramic art; from the 1980s, she only designed sculptures & unique interior design objects. Olin often got her inspiration during the 1960s & 70s from the sea, the garden & the vegetable market as well as the for the time contemporary & modern vintage & retro style. After switching to ceramic sculptures, she held her first exhibition in 1982, showing many of her well known art vases. The theme was a harvest festival where the apple, onion, potatoes & herring took sculptural forms. The onion became something of her symbol, & the collectors raved about her leek stalks & garlic. She also designed dishes & ceramic tiles for wall decorations. Her production is characterized by an everyday realism that appeal to our modern retro & vintage taste for Scandinavian design.
