Description

Monterey Bay Kelp Hand-printed, original intaglio print Image size: 6˝ x 9˝ Paper size: 11˝ x 14˝ Limited edition of 5 Printed on Hahnemuhle paper This print was inspired by the kelp forests of Monterey Bay in California, observed during ocean kayak trips through the canopy, & at the Monterey Bay Aquarium kelp forest exhibit. "Giant kelp plants form dense, sunlight-dappled forests that sway rhythmically in the cool waters of the ocean. These submarine forests grow along the Pacific coast of North America, towering up to 175 feet over the ocean floor. Beautiful & biologically complex, kelp forests provide food & shelter for a diverse community of plants & animals." An artist uses sharp tools, abrasive materials, & acid to create lines & tonal areas, & protects some areas of the copper to keep them polished & smooth. To print, an artist pulls ink across the copper plate, gently pushing it into the recessed areas, & carefully wipes the ink from the smooth surface of the plate. The inked plate is then placed on a press & covered with damp paper & felt blankets. The artist turns the wheel of the press, & great pressure forces the paper into the recessed areas of the plate to pick up the ink. Each print is created by hand & has slight printing variations. Prints are hand-signed, sold unframed, & shipped flat in rigid packaging. Artist website: nancybolan.com ©Nancy Bolan.
