One of the smallest countries in Africa, Burundi is landlocked & has an equatorial climate. Burundi is a part of the Albertine Rift, the western extension of the East African Rift. The country lies on a rolling plateau in the centre of Africa. Burundi is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east & southeast, & the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. This coffee comes from the Kayanza Commune in the Kayanza Province of Burundi. It is produced by the Twaranyuzwe Coop- a group formed in 2013 by 343 small farmers that have operated & maintained their own washing station since 2015. Founded in 2010, InerCafé Burundi oversees Burundi's coffee sector. They're tasked with farm-to-market traceability, quality control, international partnering, & more to ensure the best quality coffee is produced. This lot is 100% Red Bourbon that is fully washed, sun dried on raised beds, & dry milled in the nearby province of Ngozi. I take this to a medium light roast level that brings out a well rounded & quite complex set of flavors. Your first whiff of this coffee when you open the bag will be an intriguing aroma of tobacco & honey dew melon. in the cup you will find light notes of grapefruit, apple, & vanilla with a lingering brown sugar sweetness. Definitely a unique & lovely coffee.
