Kalimantan amber is very similar to Baltic amber in appearance. Sumatra amber is special. It is found in the regular 'amber-color' & also in reddish hues, olive green & believe it or not - blue. It used to be the only real blue amber until blue amber was found in the Dominican Republic & a small amount in Mexico. Blue amber from the Baltic area is heat & chemically treated. The blue amber is beautiful. When you look at the amber in reflected light it is blue, but when looking through the amber it looks reddish brown. The Indonesia amber polishes well & is almost indistinguishable from Baltic. The blue amber is a wonderful substance that equals or surpasses Dominican blue. Like Dominican blue, Sumatran blue needs natural light to show the beauty. It is said it will sink in fresh water & float in salt water.
