Description

Al Frueh (1880-1968) was an American cartoonist & caricaturist for The New Yorker magazine from 1925 to 1962. This print forms part of a portfolio of caricatures, Stage Folk: A Book of Caricatures by Frueh, published by Lieber & Lewis in 1922. It was exhibited at the Theatre Museum in Theatre Caricatures by Al Frueh: West End Meets Broadway, in 1990. Stage Folk published three years before Frueh began his long run at The New Yorker. As explained by Frueh himself, he hand printed all but one of the 37 prints in the book, which was limited to 500 copies. Frueh's work in Stage Folk is the same wonderful minimalist flowing style that The New Yorker readership enjoyed for so many years. This print is a caricature of the American actor & producer George M. Cohan (1878-1942). Cohan is shown in his trademark boater hat, swinging his cane. The condition of this print is excellent, given that it is 100 years old. The paper has yellowed & there is a round mark on the right side of the print. The paper is very slightly wrinkled in one area. I wasn't able to capture it in pictures. Please use the zoom feature to view the details. The overall measurements are 12.75" x 8.75". The last photo is of the cover Stage Folk. It is not part of this listing, but a point of reference. 3 17.13.3 1922 Al Frueh Caricature - George M.
