The Ionic order was the second of three design styles popularized in ancient Greece. The Doric order came first, presenting a simple design that emphasized the transition from building out of wood to more permanent materials such as stone. The Corinthian order grew out of the Ionic order & featured elaborate artistic additions, such as leaves. The Ionic order originated in the mid-sixth century on the land of Ionia & was characterized by tall, slender, proportioned, & detailed columns. Buildings including temples, theaters, & stadiums were popularly designed using the Ionic order. Ionic columns were unique & more detailed than previous Doric works. The base of the column provided structural support & could be multi-layered. The shaft was placed on top of the base & often featured fluted indentations. The capital was a slab of stone placed on top of the shaft to hold the weight of a building's roof. It often had detailed volutes, or scroll-like swirled designs, located on the side. Ionic architecture also included entablatures, a horizontal section that rested on top of the column & consisted of the architrave, the frieze, & the cornice. The success of the Ionic order can be attributed to the Golden Proportion, a mathematical ratio important to design because it is the most beautiful to the eye & represents the structure of the human body.
