Silver pendant box used for the Zar ceremony, Egypt. The word Zār is the past tense of the Arabic verb 'to visit'. While the Zār predates Islam & hearkens back to a time when pan-African society was culturally quite similar, it has been successfully integrated into Islamic civilization, & most lyrics are about God & the Prophet. On the top of the box pendant there is a lid that can be opened. It is used to insert a paper with magical words or formulas. From the first half of the 20th century, in good condition (one of the dangles is missing).
