Commemorative coin of the NBU "Kamianets-Podilskyi "OLD CASTLE" with a face value of 5 hryvnias (in a capsule) is a part of the series "Architectural Monuments of Ukraine" & is dedicated to the legendary Kamianets-Podilskyi fortress (castle), one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of Ukraine, which is part of the "Seven Wonders of Ukraine" & is a part of the National Historical & Architectural Reserve "Kamianets". There are no exact data on when the first defense structure was built on this site. Scientists are still arguing on this topic. Some are inclined to the ninth century, others - to the eleventh century. The only thing they agree on is that in the eleventh century there was a wooden palisade on this site that protected part of the Galicia-Volyn principality. After a large-scale fire in the thirteenth century, the wood had to be replaced with stone. Later on, the Castle was the main defense structure in the city's fortification complex, & it was repeatedly changed & rebuilt. The fortress is surrounded by a canyon with the Smotrych River flowing below it, which loops around the island, creating incredible views. It is thanks to this favorable location that Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress is considered one of the most impregnable fortresses in modern Ukraine. It has been captured only twice in history, so the people of Kamianets-Podilskyi are very proud of it.
