A unique curiosity. A small diorama of an oval piece of carved cork. The scene is a castle near a lake or river with sailboats & a mountain in the background. The sky & lake are hand painted. The carving is in great detail with surrounding foliage & trees. It's possible this is from Germany or even England. The Chinese were not the first to create miniature cork carvings although most of them found are Chinese. Framed under glass in a lovely oval gilded wood frame. The only issues are the tree on the left is missing its trunk, you can see the outline & there are 4 areas of missing paint on the background. The frame is really old & has some craquelure & dark places. Measures 7 1/4" tall x 9 1/4" wide in frame & the carving is 4 1/4" tall x 5 1/4" wide.
