Extremely Rare Professionally extracted from a 1976 book Please note this is an authentic 47 year-old bookplate print, taken from a new art book that has never been read, not a reprint or reproduction. 1.9 These bookplates are taken from illustrations of the wood engravings Gustav Dore, along with other master engravers he supervised, created for Dante's epic poem "Divine Comedy." The original wood engravings were created between 1308 & 1321. Dore used wood engravings in books, instead of paintings, because he knew his illustrations would be in books that were mass produced, & wood engravings were the better choice for superior reproductions. All of Dore's engravings were done in black & white to save money in the mass production process. By using wood engravings, the illustrations are very detailed & precise. Truly works of art.
