Description

Incorporated under Minnesota law in 1905, The North Butte Mining Company operated copper mines in Butte, Montana. The first years of operation were wildly successful producing over 30 million pounds of copper annually. A huge sum at the time. in 1915 a shipment of dynamite was accidentally ignited killing 15 miners & in 1917 a fire ignited in the Granite Mountain Shaft & spread quickly. 160 miners lost their lives in the fire. The fire has become to be known as the Speculator Fire. After WW I, copper prices dropped & production subsequently plummeted. in 1921 the mine closed & only ran sporadically through leasors. The mine was sold to the Anaconda Company in 1942. This North Butte Mining Company Stock Certificate features two copper miners drilling pilot holes into the mine wall for dynamite blasting.
