STORY: My name is Kevin Clarke & I personally preserve spread, mount, & ship all the insect displays in my Sonoma County CA B.U.G. (Bug Under Glass) studio. While in graduate school pursuing a degree in Conservation Biology that focused on insects, I researched how butterfly farming can combine economic development, poverty alleviation while also helping protect critical habitat. This led me to combine my love of craft, nature, & sustainability into a business that helps draw attention to this disappearing world. WHERE DO THE BUGS COME FROM? It is very important to me that the insects I use come from a sustainable source & do not negatively impact the environment. in fact, most of the specimens used in these displays have a positive impact on critical habitats, as well as the impoverished populations that live around them. Butterfly farming is a way to earn an income by raising butterflies for flying butterfly exhibits, museums, & collectors. Specimens are raised in closed enclosures & foot plants are collected from the surrounding habitat, thus giving populations an incentive to protect critical habitat that may otherwise turn into another income, like farming or logging - both of which negatively impact the environment. The insects I work with are not rare or endangered & most come from insect farming programs or breeders around the world. I DO NOT SELL mammals, reptiles, or dragonflies, which are not sustainable.
