Description

"Landscape with Christ & his Disciples on the Road to Emmaus" Jan Wildens This pleasant, relaxing scene is of Jesus walking on the road to Emmaus with the two disciples who do not yet recognize him, but who are amazed at his teaching. It's one of our favorite stories in the Bible. As he comes up to them, Jesus asks them what they are talking about, & they say, "Are you the only man in Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have been going on?" & Jesus shows his light heartedness after the Resurrection by making a little joke: He asks, "What things?" Jan Wildens (c. 1584-1653) was a Flemish painter, famous in his day, who studied in Italy. He was a close friend & collaborator with the painter Rubens. Many of his paintings look like they might have been done by a landscape painter in the 1800s. The composition of this one we noticed was very similar to one he did called "River landscape animated by figures." 1640s. Oil on canvas. 48.4 in x 66.1 in. Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
