Description

Incredibly rare form vintage Karl Griesbaum mechanical singing bird box showing a birdcage on a stand with a singing bird inside. It measures 7" tall by 4 1/4" wide & 2 3/4" deep. This form was only made for a year or so in 1925, it seems to have been largely experimental in this size. It has been fully overhauled by I'd say one of the best singing bird box repairers in the US. The case & bird are entirely original & untouched, the mechanics were not working properly & have now been restored to their former glory. Due to the open top nature of this form the mechanics sound a bit loud when activated-my repairer tells me there is nothing that can be done to muffle this sound, it is a vagrancy of the design which is perhaps why this form was never produced in any kind of significant number. I believe the closed in nature of the more common bird box form achieves this. The winding mechanism is accesses by removing the bronze drawer in which the key (a replacement) is kept. To activate it the bar is slid to the right & when it starts, move the bar back to the left again-this will put the bird through one full rotation of singing, flapping his wings & moving his beak. The casing is a gilded bronze & it is marked by the key wind as shown. A gorgeous & rare mechanical bird box for the advanced collector.
