Mexican Lacquerware is the name given to the gourds & wooden objects that have been coated for decoration purposes. The process begins smearing the object with vegetable or insect oil. Then, it is covered with powdered pigments which are let to dry & polished before being decorated. This type of folk art dates back to pre-hispanic times & today is considered one of the most important artisan traditions in Mexico. Mexican Laquerware is internationally recognized & part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Approximate Dimensions: 17.75" dia. x .5"h Even though we suggest the use of this piece as a serving tray, it is not a heavy duty item. Treat it kindly, use mostly for display & occasionally as a functional piece. Clean by whipping down with a damp terry cloth, don't submerge in water, scrub, brush, use soap, etc. It is important to understand that all items are handmade, hand painted, hand carved, organic & many are a result of experimentation. An actual person is behind the work & therefore, they will all have whimsical imperfections that you may choose to embrace rather than to critique. None of the items on this shop are perfect.
