He was depicted as either an older, bearded god or an effeminate, long-haired youth. His attributes included the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), a drinking cup & a crown of ivy. He was usually accompanied by a troop of Satyrs & Mainades (wild female devotees). Hermes was the ancient Greek god of trade, wealth, luck, fertility, animal husbandry, sleep, language, thieves, & travel. One of the cleverest & most mischievous of the Olympian gods, he was the patron of shepherds, invented the lyre, & was, above all, the herald & messenger of Mt. Olympus so that he came to symbolise the crossing of boundaries in his role as a guide between the two realms of gods & humanity. To the Romans, the god was known as Mercury.
