Opal is the birthstone for October, & for Libra (~ Sept. 23 to Oct. 23). Opals form when deposits of silica settle into rock formations. It takes 5 million years or more for a 1 cm opals to develop! This eye-catching stone also makes a beautiful engagement or anniversary ring! Ethiopian Welo Opals are a brilliantly colored, hydrophane opal. These stunning beauties were originally discovered near the town of Wegel Tena, in the Wollo province of Ethiopia c. 2008. The hydrophane charictaristic means they hold water when immersed in it, giving the opal a (temporary!) appearance of being transparent. Ethiopian Opals can hold up to 20% water at a given time! Once the opal is dry again, the original rainbow of colors reappears. I have a limited number of Ethiopian Welo Opals in stock; stone restocks take about six weeks when sold out.
