NEWS in February: the These Isles nomadic weaving workshop is rerooting & needs your help to make a proper home... please visit tinyurl.com/ycx3ywsp Your purchases also help enormously... Bright Sea scarf handwoven with the Shetland-type wool of various sheep breeds, some of it blended in Cornwall by one of the UK's most sustainable woollen mills. Turquoise, mauve, navy, orange & rust-red longitudinal stripes with the hint of small, irregular, geometric patterns along the length: Celtic village harbours on jewel-blue days. (Inspired by my mother's native Cornwall but photographed in Brittany where the fishing boats are not navy blue & rust-orange but black & rust-orange, so I will have to weave some Breton harbours sometime!) A plain weave, as per all my scarves & larger garments, makes for a looser, finer cloth than when I weave the same yarn in a cushioned twill (as per the cowl in the same colours), although this predominantly Shetland-type yarn is soft & voluminous nonetheless. Neatly finished with a blanket stitch & wilder ends, these four scarves of around 56" long measure 15" wide with pony-mane tassles that I will trim to half-inch manageable fringes if you tell me that you prefer convenience over flambouyance. in the pictures you see them modelled on a 5'6" UK women's size 12. Softness rating 3.5/5 (where 5 is best - see above charts) Itch factor 1/5 (where 0 is best) Sustainability rating 3.5/5 (where 5 is best) Care: To avoid felting or shrinkage, I recommend handwashing only, in cool water, with minimal agitation. Ecoleaf or similar will give a clean, unperfumed, soapy smell that preserves the integrity of the wool. Please note, in case of allergy, that my items come from a home with a dog, but will smell fresh. Because I live in a van with my loom, touring the Celtic lands, bear with me if your parcel is posted from an outer isle, Brittany or Ireland & is at all slow to arrive - I'll let you know. (My blog, 'Tales from the road', at www.theseisles.co will give you an idea of where I am currently.) My loom & weaving process are illustrated in pictures here: www.theseisles.co/about-my-weaving Thanks for reading, & stay tuned for frequent addition of new designs.
