This is a stunning framed letter from President William Howard Taft to a friend in Ohio. The letter is on White House stationary & is signed by President Taft in his hand. What makes this piece even better is the two photographs that have been framed with this piece. One is a closeup shot of President Taft & the other is a full portrait of the president. The letter reads: My dear Charlie: I have your kind letter of June 24th, & its enclosure, & thank you for writing. You have the right idea. The votes with which I expect to be reelected in November must come largely from these of the Republican faith, & our campaign has got to be one of conciliation instead of alienation. We must educate rather than excoriate. Thank you, old fellow, for your congratulations, your interest & your support. Sincerely yours, William H. Taft C.A. This letter was written four days after Taft had clinched the Republican nomination for a second term (that is why he is thanking his friend for the congratulations) & had won a tough fight within the Republican Party against former president Theodore Roosevelt. This culminated in the split of the Republicans with Taft the standard bearer & Roosevelt having created the Bull Moose Party to seek the White House. Taft ended up coming in third behind Wilson & Roosevelt, & suffering the worst defeat for a sitting president in history. This piece measures 27.5"x15" & is in very good condition. There is minor wear on the frame with some paint loss. The letter has previously been folded (when it was mailed).
