Excellent German stein for the 118th Infantry Regiment. This stein belonged to Gefreiter Scherle is dated 1894. The stein dates from the German Imperial era pre - World War 1. Porcelain body with a hinged pewter lid topped with a soldier, also has a large thumblift & lithopane image on bottom of the stein of a man & woman. This stein belonged to my Father who was an avid collector of steins. Condition: Previously Owned Used Antique stein from the late 1800's. Being well over 100 years old the stein does show some normal aging & wear. The porcelain is in good condition. Some minor wear to the lettering & paint. A few splatters of what appears to be paint. Measurements: approximately 11 tall including lid More about German Regimental souvenirs from marinersmuseum.org This stein was a souvenir for service in Imperial Germany, known & other souvenirs, were primarily made from 1890 to 1914 & were commissioned by active duty servicemen who were coming to the end of their mandatory service. For those who wanted to commemorate their service, some forethought had to be given. These souvenirs were not last-minute, spur-of-the - moment purchases; rather, they were expensive & took three months to fabricate. Typically, a group of enlisted would order their souvenirs together to reduce costs, & even then, these souvenirs would cost five to seven weeks' wages! Understandably, only 10% of servicemen were able to purchase a souvenir. For those who planned ahead & were able to spend the money, a very special, personalized souvenir could be taken home. & once brought home, these mementos would often be displayed on a shelf or in a cabinet rather than used at all.
