The cinematography captures herds of buffalo on the lonesome prairie below the bluest of skies & billowing clouds. This was a risky project. The story & the symbolism are simple, but it was ultimately told with a gentle & sure hand. The film is beautifully shot by lensman Dean Semler, has an oscar winning score, & a brilliant screenplay by the origin novelist Michael Blake. Although "Dances with Wolves" is technically a Western, it's also a modern action film & character study that seamlessly avoids many of the cliches of the Western genre.
