Here is an original very large oil on Masonite French Tonalist/Barbizon Impressionist Abstract garden landscape painting. It depicts a murky , romantic view of a garden with a pool in the front, a large trellis shape in the background, & bare trees on the sides. The colors the artist used are yellow/gold, dark blue, browns, black & a bit of green. The artist painted in a loose & imaginative painterly style with thicker application of paint in a few spots. Tonalism was used to portray landscapes derived from the French Barbizon School art movement, which stressed atmosphere, mood, & shadow & harmonized nature with man. This was all done outdoors in nature , plein air. the painting measures a mighty 28 x 34 in. & is semi-nailed to a wood stretcher . Someone nailed it straight through the Masonite board at the top left & top right. So there are some holes there as it looks like the nails are no longer there. The back stretcher is also loose at the top but looks to have only been used to support the weight of the painting. Most people would have this framed as it is on Masonite board & not canvas. The painting is in fair/good as is condition with a few spots at the top left & top right border that have chipped paint. There is also a small spot at the lower left area. The edges have wear , there are some surface scrapes, etc. This could definitely be professionally restored if they bother you. I bought this painting from a dealer who said she bought it in France , & believed it to be a French piece of art. A gold frame will really set this piece off & make a large show-stopper piece of art for your wall. I would place this art from the 1940-50s time period, possibly early 60s.
