Please note: Despite the name, Okinawa Star Sand is not necessarily star-shaped. in fact, it isn't really "sand" at all! It comes from Hoshizuna no Hama (Star Sand Beach) located on Iriomote Island & is actually microscopic unicellular protists known as Foraminifera. When these organisms die, their shells remain & wash up on the shore. Some may be shaped like "stars", but each grain will vary in size & shape, & may not be "star shaped" despite the name Okinawa Star Sand.
