Description

This is a late 19th or very early 20th century oil on canvas that has been mounted on a wood stretcher. The painting is signed in the lower right corner, & I'm not able to make out the artist name. The painting is a deaccession from the Rochester Museum & Science Center. The painting is done with considerable skill & detail, & I think presents a wistful mood. A lone woman on a beach is looking out to sea where there are sailboats. Lovely perspective & composition. The scenery & seashore & topography & colors remind me of Scandinavia, so I wonder whether the artist could be northern European or Scandinavian? There is one flaw where there is paint loss in the upper right corner (please see photo 6), & the painting is quite dirty & would greatly benefit from a cleaning. The canvas measures about 13 3/8" by 8" & it is about 1/2" deep. The painting would greatly benefit from a good cleaning. The quality of the piece is in the skill of the artist & the fact that the Rochester Museum thought it worth having in its collection. I think it's a better quality piece than it shows, & if cleaned & framed this would be a very nice piece. FREE shipping within the United States. I'll gladly combine shipping with other items whenever possible. For shipment elsewhere, please contact me for a shipping quote.
