This is a set of twenty (20) pieces (ten saucers & ten tea cups) of bblue & white Royal Staffordshire by the famous Clarice Cliff. The pattern is called Tonquin. English potter & designer Clarice Cliff, (1899-1972) was born in the potteries area in Tunstall, Staffordshire in 1899. She attended school until age 13 & then left to work in a lowly paid job in the potteries. After 10 years, & a several of changes of employer, she had learned a number of trades & mastered the techniques of gilding, enameling, lithography & design. At the age of 17 Clarice Cliff was working for the Royal Staffordshire Pottery owned by A J Wilkinson owned by the Shorter family. & at this time the firm's pattern books begin to credit her as the designer of some of the items illustrated in the books. She went on to have a prominent career. Her work is exhibited in several prominent museums. The tea cups & matching saucers are in near mint shape. One tea cup has a light chip to the rim. There is light crazing & discoloration. The cups are 2.25" tall by 3.5" round with a 1" handle. The saucers are 5.75" round by .75" tall.
