Outstanding, exotic rich purple blooms are produced over a long period. Spreading branches are covered with light green leaves. Small, semi - deciduous tropical tree provides long-lasting beauty. 99% Germination Rate This relatively compact but quite fast-growing oriental-looking tree bears extremely beautiful, fragrant, pink, five petalled orchid-like flowers. The branches are clad with large, deeply two-lobed leaves. Native to South China & south east Asia, it thrives outdoors in such places as Hawaii, coastal California, southern Texas, & Florida. Although the tree can stand a small amount of frost it will also do well in a conservatory. Very easy to grow from seed, in traditional medicine systems it is often used to treat various disease. These seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned & should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, & covered thinly with sand or grit & kept moist. Keep at between 20-25 degrees C. Seeds sometimes germinate within 4 to 6 weeks although some may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in warmer climates or in a large container elsewhere. A spectacular tree which blooms over a long period with fragrant purple orchid-like flowers that occur profusely from late spring to mid-summer. Will tolerate warm temperate climates where it is deciduous in winter but prefers tropical conditions & is drought tolerant when established but frost tender. Grow notes: Seed is usually best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest & hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination of this genus is around 77-86oF Bauhinia seeds germinate readily, however they do have a hard outer coating, to assist with the update of moisture required for germination the following method is suggested. This is not critical but will generally reduce germination time. Place the seed in a container & pour in just-boiled water & soak overnight. The swollen seed can then be sown, re-treat seeds that have not swollen. Sow the depth of seed size. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out. The growing medium should be well-draining but should remain damp between watering. Keep moist but not too wet as the seed may rot. Do not let the growing mix completely dry out. Germination should occur in 14-28 days @ 25-30oC General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant & require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination. Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
