In 1764 King Louis XV of France authorizes the opening of it's first glassworks foundry, which was awarded to Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency, whom served as a high ranking Church Cardinal. Upon completion, the foundry was nestled in the small (at that time) town of Baccarat situated within the Lorraine region of eastern France. Initially, production consisted of window panes, mirrors & stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation at the foundry. Their work was so sought after that Baccarat received its first Royal Commission in 1823, beginning a lengthy line of commissions for Royalty & countless heads of state throughout the world.
