MacGregor Jr. - USS Tulsa (LCS-16) is a US Navy Indepedence-class littoral combat ship. She is the third ship to be named for the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. A Littoral combat ship (LCS) consist of two classes of relatively small surface vessels designed for operations near shore & are are comparable to corvettes of other navies. The Freedom & Independence class are the first two LCS variants. They have the capabilities of a small assault transport housing two helicopters, a stern ramp for operating small boats, & capability to deliver a small assault force with fighting vehicles. in 2002, the US Navy initiated a program to develop the first of a fleet of littoral combat ships & initially ordered two trimaran hulled ships from General Dynamics which became known as the Independence class littoral combat ship after the first ship of the class. USS Independence. Even-numbered US. Navy littoral combat ships are built using the Independence-class trimaran design, while odd-numbered ships are based on a competing design, the conventional mono hull Freedom class littoral combat ship. The USS Tulsa was constructed by Austral USA, Mobile Alabama. The USS Tulsa was launched March 2017 & commissioned February 2019.
