Large Pink Heulandite Crystals with Stilbite From Jalgaon, India. 471grams 12.0cm x 9.6cm x 9.9cm (1lb 0oz 4.7in. x 3.8in. x 3.9in.) Heulandite is the name of a series of tecto-silicate minerals of the zeolite group. Prior to 1997, heulandite was recognized as a mineral species, but a reclassification in 1997 by the International Mineralogical Association changed it to a series name, with the mineral species being named: Heulandite-Ca Heulandite-Na Heulandite-K Heulandite-Sr Heulandite-Ba (described in 2002). Heulandite-Ca, the most common of these, is a hydrous calcium & aluminium silicate, (Ca,Na)2-3Al3(Al,Si)2Si13O3612H2O. Small amounts of sodium & potassium are usually present replacing part of the calcium. Strontium replaces calcium in the heulandite-Sr variety. The appropriate species name depends on the dominant element. The species are visually indistinguishable, & the series name heulandite is still used whenever testing has not been performed. The species are visually indistinguishable, & the series name stilbite is still used whenever testing has not been performed. Stilbite is usually monoclinic 2/m, meaning that it has one twofold axis of rotational symmetry perpendicular to a mirror plane. The twofold axis is the crystal axis b, & the a & c crystal axes lie in the mirror plane. For a monoclinic crystal a & c are inclined to each other at an angle β which is not a right angle. For stilbite β is nearly 130o. Stilbite crystals, however, appear to be almost orthorhombic, & a larger unit cell can be chosen, containing two formula units (Z = 2) such that resembles an orthorhombic cell, with all three crystal axes very nearly mutually perpendicular.
