Description

Antique Reproduction Framed German Print of Pompelmus - Der Herrn-Sitz und Bergstal Gibizenhoff from c. 1708 Engraving. The outside of the frame measures 18.75" tall x 14-1/8" wide. The print looks to be antique of an elaborate copper-plate engraving with later hand-coloring from Nurnbergische Hesperides by the German botanist Johann Christoph Volckamer. Published in Nuremberg, c. 1708. The print on the right side of the fruit has a tiny paper tear as shown & the print inside has some extremely subtle rippling. The edges of the wooden frame also has some tiny wear spots. The print looks to have been framed in the 1960's or 1970's according to the framer's sticker on the back which was based in Kansas City, Missouri at one time. A pomelmus is a sweet orange fruit similar to a grapefruit with a pointed end. "This handsome & unique work not only displays the citrus fruit prominently on a large scale in the foreground, but also includes very detailed view of an actual building, landscape or village. "A famous work on fruit culture & gardening, with plates in baroque style. Citrus fruits were cultivated in Europe from very early times. The sweet orange is thought to have been introduced to Portugal in 1548. "By the mid 17th century, the growing of citrus fruits had become fashionable, & no gentleman's house was complete without its orangery" Antique Reproduction Framed German Print Of Pompelmus - Der Herrn-Sitz Und Bergstal Gibizenhoff From C. 1708 Engraving Citrus Art
