USCGC Moray WPB 87331 US Coast Guard 87' Marine Protector-class coastal patrol boat (WPB) Grand Isle, Louisiana Nautical chart art print of USCGC Moray WPB 87331 from an original watercolor painting by William B. MacGregor Jr. - The first Coast Guard unit in the Grand Isle area of Louisiana was commissioned in 1919 as Barataria Bay Station 214. The Coast Guard Station Grand Isle is located on the eastern end of a barrier island which protects the mainland marsh area from erosion by the Gulf of Mexico. Its primary missions are Search & Rescue, Homeland Security, & Law Enforcement operations. The base encompasses 29 acres & 35,000 square feet of operational & multi-purpose buildings. The USCGC Moray is a Marine Protector class coastal patrol boat for the US Coast Guard. The 87-foot-long vessel was built by Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, Louisiana. Each boat is named after sea creatures which fly or swim. The USCGC Moray was commissioned in March 2001. The Coast Guard placed its original order in 1999 for 50 boats, which were delivered by mid-2002. Several additional orders brought the class to a total of 74 ships. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics & veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, & Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military & aerospace companies in industrial engineering & IR optics. His painting incorporates "old skool" mechanical & civil drafting tools & he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics & inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them.
